Congratulations on the release of Magical Mea. Please tell us more about it.

Magical MeaAbout the book:

Matthew’s little sister Mea is a trickster. Mea got her magic when Matthew lost his. Matt tries to guide Mea to use her magic for good. But the more Matt tries to mentor Mea, the more she wants to “do it her way.” Matt worries Mea might get into trouble.

What was the inspiration for this book?

Penelope:  Magical Mea is the second book in my Magical series after Magical Matthew; he was the first to get magic. Mea is Matthew’s little sister. She got her magic about the same time that Matthew lost his. Matthew was very responsible with his magical powers, using them to fix things and help people, and do good deeds. Matthew tries to mentor little sister Mea, but she is headstrong and independent. She likes to magically hide things then find them for the praise and attention of being a good “finder.” She’s tired of Matthew trying to guide her. Mea goes off on her own to make mischief, with Matthew and friend Lily chasing after her, trying to fix the messes she’s made. It has a good ending.

What is your favorite moment from the book?

Penelope:  I like the ending when Mea finally realizes that what Matthew has been trying to teach her – to do the right thing — is the best way to use her magic.

Is this your first published book?Penelope 2013 Book of the Year

Penelope:  No, Magical Mea is my second GAP book, after Magical Matthew, which won the 2013 Book of the Year Award from Creative Child Awards Program in the Positive Behavior Learning for Kids Category. I have two more in the series being illustrated now.

We’d love to hear more about you.

SONY DSCAfter I retired early from my Federal career in Training and Human Resource Management, I got my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. Then I taught at every grade level, Kindergarten through high school. Now I tutor middle school students. Although I’ve written for years, I hadn’t thought of writing children’s stories until I got the inspiration from my neighbor’s son Matthew’s double digit birthday milestone. Such a magical event – no longer a single digit child! I thought what if he really had magic, what would he do, as Magical Matthew? The idea for Magical Mea came when I thought what if Matthew’s little sister got her magic but didn’t want to be the good girl? What if she wanted to be different and play tricks on people? The next two stories in my “Magical” series are:  Magical Mea Goes to School, and Magical M and M. They’re with Kevin Collier, my illustrator. He’s done a great job capturing the fun and angst of the characters in the stories.

I’ve written a “color” rhyming remembrance of My Grandma’s Pink House. I have two middle grade stories working, The Case of the Missing Lollipop and The Racoon Witches of Calhoun County and also two young adult novels, The Perfect Home and The Young Amazons in the works. Besides spending time with my family, I enjoy dog walking, reading middle grade and young adult novels, gardening, church activities, and singing in choir. I’m a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and am a certified Reading Therapist with Read America. I also review children’s books on my blog.

How can our readers learn more about you and any upcoming Magical Mea events?

I will post events and reviews on my blog,
